Hot flash
Last Updated on March 12, 2025
Description

A sudden feeling of warmth in the upper body that most often affects the face, neck and chest.

Overview

A hot flash most often results from stopping periods. Most people who have hot flashes have them daily. They can affect quality of life and disrupt sleep.

Symptoms

Besides a sudden feeling of warmth in the upper body, signs and symptoms may include sweating and chills. Skin may look flushed and blotchy. The heart may beat fast.

Treatments

The best way to relieve hot flashes is to take estrogen. For people who can't take hormones, some antidepressants and anti-seizure medicines might help.

Self-care

Stay away from triggers, such as spicy foods, hot drinks, caffeine, tobacco and alcohol. Stay in cool places and use fans. Dress in layers that can be taken off. Losing weight also might help.

When to make a doctor's appointment
