A mental health condition that causes extreme mood swings, including emotional highs (mania or hypomania) and lows (depression).
Bipolar disorder, sometimes called manic-depressive disorder, is associated with mood swings that range from the lows of depression to the highs of mania.
Swings may occur a few times a year or several times a day. For some, depression and mania may exist at the same time.
The disorder can be controlled with medications and counseling.
