Description

A noncancerous soft tissue tumor that develops from smooth muscle.

Overview

A leiomyoma is a noncancerous soft tissue tumor that develops from smooth muscle. Leiomyomas are also called uterine fibroids. As many as 70% to 80% of people in their childbearing years have these uterine growths.

Symptoms

Many people who have uterine fibroids don't have any symptoms. In those who do, symptoms can include heavy menstrual bleeding and painful periods. Other symptoms may be a growing stomach area and a feeling of pressure or pain in the pelvis, stomach or lower back.

Treatments

There's no single best treatment for uterine fibroids. If uterine fibroids aren't causing symptoms, watchful waiting may be the best option. When treatment is needed, medicines can help shrink fibroids and treat symptoms. Minimally invasive treatments can break up or shrink fibroids. Surgery is an option for tumors that need to be removed.
