Lower GI bleed

Bleeding from the small intestine, large intestine, rectum or anus.

Overview

Causes of lower GI bleeding include constipation, hemorrhoids and cancer. Massive bleeding can be dangerous. Small amounts of bleeding over time may lead to conditions such as anemia.

Symptoms

Lower GI bleeding can appear as blood in the stool, on toilet paper or in the toilet bowl. Blood may appear dark maroon to bright red.

Treatments

With lower GI bleeding, it's important to see a healthcare professional. Medical care may be needed right away.
