Magnesium deficiency from too little in the diet is not common in otherwise healthy people. But magnesium can be lost due to certain health conditions, such as diabetes, too much alcohol use and certain medicines.
Early symptoms include not wanting to eat, tiredness, nausea and vomiting. Later symptoms can include numbness, muscle cramps, seizures and irregular heart rhythms.
Treatment includes magnesium supplements. Supplements often are given through a vein. Any underlying cause also will be treated.
