An infection caused by bacteria that spreads quickly through the body and destroys tissue.

The germ that causes necrotizing fasciitis enters the body through a break in the skin, such as a cut or surgical wound. Most people who get the infection have other health conditions that lower their ability to fight infection.

Symptoms start with a red, warm or swollen area that spreads quickly. Other symptoms include pain, high fever, blisters, tiredness, nausea and vomiting.

Surgery to remove the dead, damaged or infected tissue must be done urgently. More than one surgery might be needed. Antibiotics started quickly and given through a vein can help stop the infection from spreading to healthy tissue.
