Description

Inflammation of the peritoneum, the thin layer of tissue lining the abdomen and covering the organs in the abdomen.

Overview

The peritoneum is the thin layer of tissue lining the abdomen, which is the area between the chest and hips, and covering the organs in the abdomen. Peritonitis is often caused by germs that reach the peritoneum through a hole, also called a rupture, in an organ.

Symptoms

Symptoms of peritonitis can include fever, not being able to pass stool, belly pain or tenderness, bloating or a feeling of fullness in the abdomen, vomiting, confusion, and diarrhea. People may also have an upset stomach, loss of appetite, thirst, less urine than usual and tiredness.

Treatments

Treatment for peritonitis includes antibiotics. People also may need surgery to remove infected tissue. Peritonitis treatment also includes supportive care to ease symptoms. This can include pain medicine, fluids or oxygen. Often, people need to stay in the hospital for treatment.
