Disruptions in sleep due to various reasons, snoring and apnea not only cause a number of health conditions on their own, but also may be indicators of other conditions. A sleep study is carried out in order to collect all available data, which is then evaluated by specialists for diagnosis and treatment of such disorders.
Sleep Apnea Polyclinic and Sleep Laboratory of Koç University Hospital admit patients under leadership of Prof. Yüksel Peker, M.D., a faculty member of the Department of Pulmonary Medicine. Following polygraphic tests, which may be conducted at home, treatment of patients diagnosed with sleep apnea is initiated in the polyclinic setting. Polysomnography and positive airway pressure (PAP) titration are also practiced at our sleep laboratory for diagnosis and treatment of obstructive sleep apnea, obesity hypoventilation syndrome and other sleep-related respiratory disorders. Another diagnostic procedure available at the unit is daytime multiple sleep latency test, which ensures an objective evaluation of excessive daytime somnolence. In addition to routine clinical services, the sleep laboratory team conducts multidisciplinary clinical research. For instance, our project titled ‘Simulator-assisted Detection of Somnolence in Drivers’ is in progress with the support of the Scientific and Technological Research Council of Turkey.
